Public WiFi Deployment: A Model Project under the WIFI4EU Program

Under the European WIFI4EU program, a local authority in an overseas region set out to implement a free public WiFi network across two municipalities. The goal was to provide accessible, high-quality internet service for both residents and visitors, all while meeting the performance and security standards required by WIFI4EU.

Challenges

The team had to address multiple technical, logistical, and organizational hurdles, including:
Optimal Coverage: Identifying strategic locations to install WiFi access points and ensure reliable throughput.
Regulatory Compliance: Meeting all WIFI4EU requirements and adhering to relevant regulations.
Local Collaboration: Working closely with municipal representatives to validate site placements, secure equipment installations, and plan ongoing maintenance.

Solutions Implemented

WiFi Alliance-Certified Devices: Access points were chosen to meet the latest industry standards and installed in key public areas (such as town squares, administrative buildings, and parks).
User-Friendly Portal: A simplified login portal streamlines user access while providing secure session management.
Performance Monitoring: Real-time tracking ensures a minimum data speed of 30 Mbps, in alignment with project targets.
Close Coordination: Frequent communication with local officials helped tailor the deployment to the community’s needs and ensure long-term support.

Results Achieved

Enhanced Digital Access: Residents and visitors now enjoy reliable, free internet across main public areas.
WIFI4EU Compliance: The local authority has successfully met all performance and security criteria.
